Reducing unwanted litters of cats

Run entirely by volunteers, Rotherham Rescue Rangers is a cat charity working to reduce the number of unwanted litters being born in and around Rotherham in South Yorkshire. The charity operates a neutering programme designed to prevent unwanted kittens being abandoned.

How does it work?

Rotherham Rescue Rangers campaigns for pet owners to neuter their animals to prevent unwanted litters of kittens being born and abandoned. The charity provides advice and support to cat owners, as well as contributing financially to the cost of cat neutering for owners who are on a low income, benefits or a pension. In some cases, the charity will care for particularly needy animals and will cover the cost of food and vet bills as well as neutering. It also helps neuter feral cats, caring for them in their natural habitat or, if possible, finding a home for them.

How we’re helping

Rotherham Rescue Rangers relies entirely on donations from members of the public to continue its important work. In August 2015, the Petplan Charitable Trust was pleased to help the charity with a £1,500 grant towards its ‘Nice to Neuter’ programme. The grant has been used to support work to neuter the area’s cats and kittens, and up to November of the current financial year, 113 cats and kittens had been neutered, representing a substantial reduction in potential unwanted litters in the Rotherham area. Over a hundred of these animals have been successfully rehomed to loving families. After neutering, the charity has ensured that each animal is cared for in its natural environment in cases in which rehoming wasn’t an option.

Among the animals Rotherham Rescue Rangers has helped is KP, a cat rescued after being found roaming a KP Nuts factory. After being placed in foster care for up to five months, she was neutered before having any kittens and she’s now found a loving new home. Another success story was that of Bobbi and Harry, who were rescued as kittens and neutered while being looked after in foster care. In another happy ending for Rotherham Rescue Rangers, both kittens have now found forever homes.
