The charity enables victims/survivors to escape to safety before being reunited with their much-loved animals.
Sadly, animals are also often victims/survivors of domestic violence and abuse. Pets are threatened, harmed or even killed in at least half of all domestic violence and abuse cases where pets are in the household. Abusers often target pets as a way to intimidate, frighten, terrorise and exert power and control over their partners and children. For many victims-survivors, concerns for their animal’s safety and welfare prevents or delays them leaving. It can also mean they return to their abuser.
Refuge4Pets fosters dogs, cats, horses, birds, reptiles, rabbits and small animals such as hamsters. The charity provides them with a temporary home with a volunteer foster carer for up to six months. Victims/survivors of domestic violence and abuse often have to leave with nothing, so the charity covers the cost of food, bedding and any necessary vet treatment for all the pets in its care.
Petplan Charitable Trust is pleased to be able to support the vital work of Refuge4Pets. In July 2019, we awarded the charity with a £5,000 grant. This contributed to the costs of the veterinary treatment it provides to the animals it fosters.
“The Petplan Charitable Trust grant has made a huge difference to our charity,” says Mary Wakeham of Refuge4Pets. “It has helped us to provide vital and emergency veterinary treatment for many of our foster animals, from hamsters to horses.”
