Founded in 2009 by Hannah and Stephen Potts, Camp Nibble is an animal rescue charity in Leeds, West Yorkshire. It specialises in rehoming small animals, with a particular focus on rabbit welfare. Rodents, tortoises and hens also come into the charity’s care when necessary. The charity has recently been honoured by the Prime Minister with a ‘Points of Light’ award in recognition of their outstanding work in support of animal welfare.
The charity rescues rabbits and other small animals that have been abandoned or ill-treated, as well as stepping in when an owner is unable to care for their pet because of a change in circumstances. The charity uses a network of foster homes to ensure that rabbits are well looked after before being adopted into a permanent new family home, and at any given time there are around 70 animals in the charity’s care. If an animal can’t be rehomed because of chronic health problems, Camp Nibble ensures that it is given permanent sanctuary.
Camp Nibble operates on an entirely voluntary basis, relying on donations from members of the public to continue its work in caring for unwanted small animals. In 2015, Petplan Charitable Trust helped support this vital work by awarding Camp Nibble a £1,000 grant to help cover the costs of rabbit neutering, vaccinations and veterinary care.
In the year of the grant, Camp Nibble was able to offer a safe haven to 152 rabbits. These were all vaccinated and neutered before being rehomed, ensuring that they can go on to lead happy, healthy lives in their new homes, without generating unwanted litters. Veterinary costs are expensive even with a discount for charity, so the Petplan Charitable Trust grant was put to good use in ensuring that every pet received the best possible care.
