Founded in 1988, Ashbourne Animal Welfare runs The Ark, a rescue and rehoming centre for cats and dogs in Ashbourne. The centre runs a weekly veterinary clinic where rescue dogs and cats are routinely health checked, neutered, microchipped and vaccinated. They are also given veterinary treatment if required. It is this crucial aspect of the organisation’s work that PPCT is helping to support.
The grant came at a good time for Ashbourne Animal Welfare, with a large number of animals needing new homes and therefore requiring routine veterinary checks and neutering prior to rehoming. Several animals also needed more intensive veterinary attention, leading to record vet bills for the charity, with operations costing as much as £720 each.
Thanks to the grant from Petplan Charitable Trust, the charity was able to pay for treatment for animals such as Bodger, a young Patterdale Terrier with a severe injury to his bottom jaw and Victor, a young cat with a leg injury so severe that it required amputation. Along with others, both these animals have now fully recovered after several weeks of being cared for at The Ark, and are enjoying a new life with their adoptive families.
The Ark provides modern, comfortable cattery and kennel facilities for the rescue animals that pass through it, with plenty of space indoors and outside for animals to run around. Cat cuddle gardens give volunteers space to interact with the Ark’s feline inhabitants. Dogs can enjoy their cuddles in the Dog Chalet, in addition to being walked at least twice a day around the six-acre grounds and exercise paddocks. There’s even an Animal Behaviourist on hand for dogs who require a bit of extra training before being rehomed. As well as these excellent facilities, the Ark also has isolation and recovery areas for sick animals.
